Plans to increase ALN provision in Blaenau Gwent move to next step

Blaenau Gwent Council’s Cabinet has agreed to progress with plans to increase capacity for pupils with Additional Learning Needs in mainstream schools on a phased basis over the next five years.

Following a formal consultation period, the Cabinet were presented with a report of the findings which overall showed a widespread support for the proposals.

The plan is to remodel existing learning environments to create classroom spaces and associated facilities to accommodate and provide appropriate resources for the proposed ALN and ASD provisions. In addition, and alongside this, the Council will work with schools to develop a long-term plan to support sustained growth and development.

The Council‘s Cabinet Member for People and Education, Councillor Sue Edmunds says:

“I am pleased that Cabinet has supported these much-needed plans to increase capacity and support for children and young people with Additional Learning Needs in Blaenau Gwent. All our children deserve the opportunity to develop their potential and succeed within our own schools and communities, and we are committed to making sure they have that opportunity.

“Our phased approach offers an effective and sustainable long-term solution for Blaenau Gwent’s vulnerable learners, giving them tools they need to access education alongside their own peer group and giving our schools the tools they need to support a wide range of learners in a local setting.â€

The plans will now proceed to the publication of a Statutory Notice.
