A grant aimed at funding local community food initiatives that may have innovative ideas for improving access to healthy and sustainable foods in Blaenau Gwent.
This grant scheme is for projects that promote a more coordinated approach to tackling the root causes of food insecurity through supporting community led initiatives to promote healthy, sustainable eating and growing. This includes growing projects, community food pantries, food education programmes such as cookery and nutrition classes, and furthering the good food movement in Blaenau Gwent.
Whilst this grant is open to all community groups and providers, it is not intended for emergency food support such as purchasing food supplies for food parcels/food banks or projects that promote the consumption of High- Fat, sugar, or Salt (HFSS) foods.
An example of a project that was supported last year was Pentref Tyleri Community Interest Company (CIC). Situated in the in the heart of Cwm Tyleri Village, this group is centred around skill sharing, community regeneration and food education; from growing to baking. The community Hub and caf茅 used funding to purchase a speed composting system, with which they aim to begin a neighbourhood composting scheme whereby local residents can donate household food waste and receive fertile compost in return. Pentref Tyleri hopes this will inspire the community to start growing in their own gardens.
The closing date for applications is the 18th of September 2024 and projects must be delivered and completed by 31st of March 2025.
