Housing benefit payments

If you are entitled to Housing Benefit this can be paid in a number of different ways depending on what type of property you live in.

You may find that your first payment is for more than your normal regular amount because it includes a back payment from the date you claimed.

Private tenants:

Most private tenants are paid every two weeks, in arrears. If your Housing Benefit is paid directly to your landlord, it will be paid every four weeks in arrears. This includes housing association landlords.

Payments direct to landlords

Housing Benefit for most people in privately rented properties can only be paid directly to the landlord when the claimant cannot manage听their financial affairs, is unlikely to pay their rent or has eight weeks rent arrears or more.

If you are in rent arrears we can make the first payment to yourself but in your landlord鈥檚 name.听

If you are entitled to Council Tax reduction then we will pay this direct to your Council Tax account. A new bill will show the amount that you then have to pay after the reduction has been applied.听
